Following Microsoft's acquisition of Hotmail.com, there was some hope
that the intrusive, abusive and obscene postings from this web based
mail system client base might abate.

In Canberra Australia there is an anonymous local hotmail user,
"crash100", who delights in writing obscene unsolicited e-mail and
newsgroup postings in newsgroups such as canb.genaral, and writes also
direct to readers of this newsgroup. Despite best efforts to identify
this person, all have failed.

The obscenities mailed are of the highest order and despite more than
half a dozen petitions to ab...@hotmail.com there has been no response
to complaints.

One can only assume that MICROSOFT apparently tolerates the abuse of the
Terms and Conditions of Service by Hotmail clients, that this lax policy
encourages this sort of client.

This is indeed a sad slur on a reputable company, and one can only
wonder at hotmail.com and Microsoft's indifference. Is there any reader
that knows of an address of someone that might actually take this sort
of abuse seriously ?

Rgds,

I have seen some of the dialog (sort of tip of the iceberg) relating
to how to get the smut out of these newsgroups, and I can assure you
that the issue is taken seriously, and that a great deal of money and
effort is being expended. I can't speak to Hotmail's management, but
messages to ABUSE@ (isp name) and POSTMASTER@(isp name) are the usual
routes to getting something started. From your post, I would assume
these avenues have already been explored, but it doesn't hurt to
inundate them--ideally with copies of abusive messages with all
headers intact.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I know this is may be the best
place to post, but I could not find a better one and cannot ID an
appropriate Microsoft or Hotmail Corporate address that elicits any
response at all. Maybe there is hope. It is a shame, though, that after
having sent half a dozen really obscene, lengthy mail items - in their
entirety with full headers - to Hotmail since January there has not been
a single reply other than for the autorobot response.

Anonymous mail services like hotmail.com are responsible for more
abusive mail and the rendering useless of more useful newsgroups than
anything else. I just cannot see any merit to any responsible
Corporation like Microsoft in being a part of these uncontrolled
services.

I guess there's no money to be made by Hotmail / Microsoft in having to
clean up it's own mess. It comes back in their faces eventually through
really poor public perceptions of both Corporations over their inaction.

Cheers,

Thank you, sir, for the reply.

If hotmail don't act on the "abuse" e-mail correspondence of their own
initiative, there's not much else one can do but appeal to the community
at large. I realise this is a nuisance to some, but I am sure there are
a good many Canberran's who appreciate your assistance.

The Hotmail TOS prohibits using the services for obscene messages such as you
describe. Email sent to ab...@hotmail.com will receive an auto-confirmation,
and you'll also receive a resolution to each case. Because of the volume of
email we deal with, the resolution you get may also be pre-written, after a
Policy Enforcement representative has handled the case.
