I have Microsoft Office on my Vista computer and when I am sent a .ppt file,
it gives me the option of either saving it or opening it. When I click to
open it, it gives me an error saying there is no program associated with the
file. I go to Set Associations, and sure enough, .ppt IS in fact associated
with Power Point Viewer. Why? Is it a security protocol but gives the wrong
error message? Why does it make me save it in order to open it?

Interesting - I am helping my Mom with some email issues and am dealing with
this identical problem. I can save the file to a folder and open it just
fine. But I can't open it directly from her email.

I have tried all the Tools->Options->Security things that make sense - but
nothing seems to help.

FWIW - the following

http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/149/1/Unable-to-open-PPS-attachments-directly-from-Windows-Mail-in-Windows-Vista.html

addresses this problem in principle, but the registry entries in the system
that I am dealing with do not match close enough to allow me to follow those
specific instructions.

Try the safety options under tools. you need to be able to see pictures in
your downloads, as well as being able to open "files that could potentially
harbor viruses".
if you keep[ on tyour toes you should be able to avoid trouble.
