We are having a problem here using MS NT4 DNS SP3. We just changed our
address with Internic having used a Beta DNS server on a Vax for the last
several years. Our SMTP gateway is a Lotus Domino server and occasionally we
have errors stating

"Name server is not running on the specified DNS hose, or Name Server times
out during the process."

This happens to some sites more than others but eventually mail gets through
to the problem domain. If doing a nslookup just after receiving this
message, the DNS will not resolve the name, responding instead with "No <A>
records for specified host. If you immediately type in the same host name
and try it again the server will resolve the name and all is fine.

I am new to DNS admin and am not real sure exactly where to start. Any
assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi, Bill -

If you are using SP3 then make sure you have applied the DNS Hot Fix.
