If you double-click it, what program tries to open it?
By searching with Google, it appears that the .wps suffix may have been
created by Microsoft Works. I'm surprised that Word won't open it
correctly.
I tried NeoOffice 2.2.3, Word 2008, AppleWorks 6 and Pages 09, but none
had .wps listed as a Save-As option.
Using a small TextEdit file, I renamed it with the .wps suffix.
Get-Info indicated that it should be opened with NeoOffice. Of course
it did open with NeoOffice, but it is really just a text file!
You might try both OpenOffice and NeoOffice, and see if either works.
