i can not install ActiveSync 3.7.1 on my Virtual PC 7.0.1. The
Installation hangs at 91%. Anny hints?

Hopefully, you didn't cancel it. If you cancel during that phase, the
install usually gets messed up and there is no way to finish an install
afterwards.
Before you start, ensure the Pocket PC device is NOT connected to the
desktop computer.
Run the ActiveSync install program. This is MSASYNC.EXE. (You already
have
this program, otherwise you wouldn't know you had a problem installing
it. After it hangs up (after it installs the Temp files and fails to
run
the rest of the setup), restart your machine. (This basically ensures
that
setup.exe stops running.)
>From the Start menu, point to My Computer, Control click, and select
Properties. Go to the Advanced tab, then click on Environment
Variables. In
the top portion, there will be a variable TEMP. (There is probably also
a
TMP variable, but YOU want the TEMP variable.) Double click on it and
the
bottom section will be highlighted. Control click on it and select
Copy.
Now go to the Start menu and select Run. Highlight everything that is
there
then Control click and select Paste. Now click OK and a Windows
Explorer
window will open. Double click on IXP000.TMP (it might be IXP001.TMP or
similar), and double click on is_setup.exe.
This should start the setup! (You'll now be prompted to connect your
device
and ActiveSync should work (but NO guarantees).)
Works for me every time, and I've never once had to mess with TMP files.
ActiveSync had never been installed to any of these virtual machines
before.
At a guess, what your workaround is addressing is when a previous
installation of ActiveSync was aborted or otherwise failed because the
user was impatient. I will say that after an activesync install is
aborted, that I was never able to get it to install again afterwards.
Of course, as a long time experienced Windows user, I generally
recommend that if a hardware install fails, that the user fall back to
their last system restore checkpoint or start over entirely.
Here's a link to one of the best writeups I've seen on getting
Activesync working in VPC.
