If you have Word 2004 or earlier, you can use a macro to set the zoom level
whenever you open a document (I use that at work to set every document to
125 per cent on open).
Word 2008 is not compatible with Spaces. If you run Spaces, you will get
problems. That can't be changed in this version. Turn Spaces off, or use
Word 2004.
Hope this helps

Not disagreeing with or contradicting anything you wrote but this is one
example of a different ilk: Take document A, size the window & set the zoom.
Open & close the file all day with no variation. However, close doc A, open
doc B & resize it to something other than what A was, then open A again. It
opens at the size of B - and no, Spaces & dual monitors aren't involved :-)

Well, that is interesting! I have never had the patience to fully test
that, but if it's doing that, that would be a bug. That would indicate that
they're storing the Zoom setting in the .plist, on an application-wide
basis, instead of in the document where it should be.
I use a macro ... :-)

I did a little testing and here's how it works in Word 2004 for Mac
version 11.5.3. I won't be able to test Word 2008 using Leopard until I
can kick my son off his MacBook Pro for five minutes. Don't hold your
breath.
Individual documents retain their zoom level and window sizing *if* in
addition to the zoom setting and resizing some additional change is made
to the document before saving. For example, add a space then delete the
space before saving.
New blank documents retain the window sizing of the previous new blank
document but not the zoom level, which is set by the Normal template.

It should set the zoom level into the document (although of course, it won't
save it unless you "dirty" the document and cause the text to be saved).
If Word 2008 (when you regain possession...) is doing something different,
that would be a bug!

A new blank document will mimic the window sizing and zoom setting of
the last document closed in a given session, whether or not the document
has been saved. By "last document closed" I mean that after closing it
there are no more open documents.
While a dirtied and saved document will retain its zoom setting, it
takes its window sizing, as above, from the last document closed in the
current session.
(The situation may be more complicated than this, but as I said vertigo
is setting in. A new blank document may take its window sizing from the
last dirtied & saved document closed. It will also take its window
sizing from the last new blank document if that is the last document
closed.)
John: When you say that you use macros for window sizing & zoom control
do you mean VBA for Word 2004 or Applescript for 2008? If the latter
then it might be helpful to post an example.
RRR
I use VBA to do this ã in Word 2003 at work an in Word 2004 on the Mac.
I can't normally use Word 2008 for business because it has no VBA: my
business depends on lots of VBA :-)
