My supervisor wants me to change the page numbers in the appendices of a document to read A-1...n, B-1...n, etc. Is there a way to do this?

I have tried editing the page numbers by going into the footer, but what I end up with is all odd numbers being the same and all even numbers being the same.

Thanks,

Connie

Yes, there are a few ways, but directly editing the Footer content isn't one
of them :-) You need to have a Section Break for each section in which you
want the numbering to be different. In that section the Link to Previous
checkbox [Formatting Palette> Header & Footer] needs to be cleared & the
appropriate Page Number formatting used.

See Word Help on the subjects of Section Breaks & Start page numbering on a
different page. Reply with any specific questions if necessary.

Thanks for the information.

I have setup the section breaks and can get the appendices to renumber 1, 2, 3,...n, but I want to the to be A-1, A-2, A-3,...A-n, etc. Is there a way to do that? I don't see how to get the letter in.

Not as a matter of formatting -- the prefix is actual content. In the
Appendix section's footer type the A and the - prior to the page number
field. Make sure the check is cleared for Different First Page. If you're
using Odd/Even Page Breaks [Facing Pages] you'll need to add the prefix
literally in both the Odd Page & Even Page Footers.

Now: Use styles Heading 7, 8, and 9 for your Appendix headings.

Make their Font formatting the same as Heading styles 1, 2, and 3.

Then customise the numbering for Heading 1 to 9 so that levels 7, 8, and 9
express the first digit as an upper-case letter. Then you have done the
job.

Shauna Kelly explains how to customise the numbering here:
