Also, be certain that both OS X & Office are fully updated as well as
running Apple's Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions.

Good thought, but that setting doesn't affect pictures & if that were the
problem the images wouldn't show up in Print Preview either :-)

Exactly what are you referring to as a "picture"? What file format are they?
And how did you place them in the document?
Are they In Line with Text or do they have some type of Text Wrap applied?
If you've used Text Wrap, what style?
Are the images in the body content of the document? Are they in a table? Are
they in the Header/Footer?
You're certain that the printer mfr's web site didn't have an updated driver
available? Did you check their support pages for any similar reports?

Is there a question here? If so it would be better to post it as a NEW
message rather than as a REPLY to another user's issue - even though it may
seem to be related. Be certain to include your specific info pertaining to
update level of both Office & OS X. Any print concerns are dependent on
those factors but even more so on the printer driver, so first check the HP
site for an update as well.
Based on your description of the "intermittent" nature of the problem & the
mention of "selected pages", though, I tend to think that you're dealing
with floating graphics. Regardless of where they 'appear' to be positioned
each one is anchored to the beginning of a paragraph. If that paragraph is
not included in the content to be printed the image anchored to it will not
be printed either.
If you need more assistance on your issue please include a detailed
description of exactly what you're dealing with when you post your message.

The answer to that problem is "Be aware of where the pictures are anchored."
In a Word document, EVERYTHING is part of a paragraph, or is anchored to a
paragraph. The paragraph is the fundamental unit of a Word document.
For pictures to print when you select some pages, you need to ensure that
the pictures are actually anchored to paragraphs that are contained within
the selection.
If the pictures are in the header or footer, they may not be, and thus they
won't print.
With "Floating" pictures (i.e. Any pictures formatted any other way than "In
line with text") the pictures are actually stored in an object store at the
end of the document. When you print, you must ensure that your selection
includes the "Anchor" for the picture, or Word doesn't know that you want to
include it.
To see where the anchor is, go to Word>Preferences>View and turn on "Object
Anchors". Then click the object, and you will see a ⚓ symbol appear to the
left of the paragraph that contains the anchor.
Hope this helps
