Word v X. latest service release.

Mac OS 10.2.6

Within a split second of typing a " the " morphs and becomes either
<< or >> depending on which way the quotation marks would ordinarily
"lean." I suspect I've somehow triggered Peruvian or Botswanan
quotation marks, but don't know how I did it.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

This is a fixed autocorrect for French and doubtless other languages.
Have you checked you're in English? Tools > Language -- set English
as default. Failing that, have a look in Tools > Autocorrect. On the
first tab, make sure it's not somehow been set to replace "". If you
want turn off Autocorrect as you type. On the second tab, try
unchecking Replace quotes with smart quotes. This should turn " into
66 and 99 in English, but turning it off might stop it doing what it's
doing.

Word is constantly trying to outsmart me! It's postively ornery and
exasperating when it comes to numbering paragraphs.

But try this fix. When you get an automatic change you don't like, try
Command-Z. It should take you back one step (at a time), and get you
back to what you typed before Word "fixed" it.
