Try the "paste special" option and choose either "formatted text" or "unformatted text." Formatted will usually paste in your text as you have it, and unformatted will usually pick the style from the document that you're pasting your text into.

The brackets that get inserted around the copies text are probably bookmark range indicators. If you go to Insert|Bookmark after
they first appear, you'll probably find a bookmark named OLE_LINK1. Add-ins like Adobe Acrobat seem to have the habit of causing
this (but I have no idea why), when the copied data are pasted to another OLE-aware app, even when there's no apparent reason for
the Add-in to involve itself in the process.

You can either get rid of the distraction of unwanted bookmarks by choosing
bookmarks and deleting the OLE_LINK ones, or making bookmarks invisible in
Word's settings.
