Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

So I really hope I can get some help here because after scouring the web for answers I have come up empty handed. I am using the Office 08 version of word on Mac.

I have some figures and tables that are in landscape mode. I want to put page numbers on these figures and tables, though not in a landscape mode, but in portrait mode. The reason for doing this is that most of my papers in are in portrait mode and have the page numbers on the top right hand side. When trying to put the page numbers on the landscape pages I cannot put them in the correct orientation I want ( the orientation I want is that when looking at a document in landscape mode, the page number ought to be to the bottom right in such a manner that if I orient my sheet to portrait mode the page number will be up and down versus on its side).

Hope my explanation was sufficient, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Macropod and others,

I have found this link previously, but the instructions given are for word 2003 and 2007 respectively. I have mac word 2008 (the newest version I believe) and the instructions located there are different than the options available on my software.

Any suggestions?

thanks again for your help.

The instructions & method for Word 2008 are virtually identical to what's
given there for Word 2003, it's just that the illustrations in the article
were taken directly from the PC version. A few of the referenced elements -
such as Header/Footer features - may be in a somewhat different location but
the features themselves are the same.

Follow the directions for Word 2003. If you have any specific stumbling
blocks feel free to ask for clarification.

So I have found a much simpler way to do this in word 2008!

here are the steps:

1. Set up your document in landscape mode as you see fit.

2. Hit View, then Draft.

3. Insert Page Numbers - Insert it in the bottom right corner.

4. View Header and Footer

5. There will be a text box around the footer now, click it.

6. Click Format, then text direction. Orient the text to the correct direction (only two options)

7. You can then manually adjust the margins of the page number from the toolbars of header/footer.

You are done! Thank you all for your responses and help!

Well, you do need to understand that what you have "done" using that method
has some limitations and risks :-)

That method of inserting page numbers is the kiss of death for your headers
and footers. You can do it, for short throw-away documents.

But you should avoid it for any serious documents you want to keep, because
the Page Number is now not part of the running footer, which will end in
tears in a long document :-)

Cheers

Consistent with what John has said, this shows the way to do it:
