Go into Word>Preferences and search for "Tab"...

Cheers

Go to Word-->Preferences-->Edit. Click the box that says, "Tab and backspace set left indent."

That should do it.

If by this you mean, you're trying to use Bullets and Numbering, and after hitting Enter, you want to "Tab" to the next character or actually tab backwards to the previous one:

1. Go to Word
2. Go to Preferences
3. Go to Edit
4. Check the box "Tabs and backspace set left indent".

Now when you hit Tab, the next symbol will show up.
To Tab backwards, press the shift + tab or delete.

Hope this helps.

No, that's not what he meant, and what you say is completely wrong.

I think you may have misunderstood how that setting works.

Go into word > Preferences > Auto correct > Auto Format as you type > tick the box that says tabs and backspace set left indent. It worked for me :)

Hi, I have the same problem many have in this thread.
I am running MAC OSX V10.9.4
Word for MAC 2011 14.4.3

I have done everything above including adding a new format and it still does not change. I am certain I am doing something wrong but I need help.

unfortunately for me (Word 2011 for Mac), Laura's solution isn't working. Everything is checked that should be, nothing is checked that shouldn't be and I'm still getting tabs instead of indents.

I'm putting a bulleted outline in a table cell (don't @ me on this, it's what the bosses require for the formatting) and instead of intending my bullet points/numbered outline/what have you, it's just kicking me to the next cell. I have done this in the past, so I'm at a loss as to why it's not working this time.

So frustrating.
