Afraid not - Text boxes can't be rotated. You can ad text to other shapes
which can be rotated, but even with them the shape rotates but the text
stays horizontal. You can create rotated objects with text in PPt or other
graphics-based program then bring the shape into the doc.

I too am having trouble rotating a text box - I rotated 2 text boxes on a document but when I try to do it again, I don't see the rotate, flip menu. I can't seem to figure out how it happened before.

Hi Marlene -

Did you read the *reply*?

You must have been working with a shape other than a Text Box or in a
program other than Word 2008... There is no other viable explanation:-)

Though it is not possible to directly rotate a text box (very
saddening to me the loss of features between Word 2000 and Word 2008),
one can create a text box, type the desired text within it, then
select the text and go to the format menu, choosing "Text
Direction..." This only works if you want it rotated 90 degrees to
the left or right.

Why would Microsoft remove this useful feature? Believe it or not, I
actually used this feature fairly often.

I hope my workaround is good enough for your needs, infernal and
Marlene.

Hi! I hope this answer helps...

I, too, was looking for a way to rotate a text box, and finally found a way! So you have to click on the text box, then at the top menu, there's an icon of a sideways paragraph (its kind of over to the right side.) Click on that icon, and you can rotate it each way, except for upside-down. I use a mac, so it works for me. I don't know if it's on other computers but its worth a try! :)

Select the text box and use the menu at the top Format > Text Direction. It rotates the text within the box rather than rotating the entire text box. Some people might have an icon at the top of the window that does the same thing as one of the other replies mentions.

Really bummed that even the Text Direction option doesn't allow for 180 degree rotation of text. I wanted to use it for printing a card that would fold in the middle and result in the text being upright.

In article <ffe18c65-5199-4b82...@googlegroups.com>,
How about changing Page Setup to Landscape and using the 90-degree
text options? I did that with a couple of homemade gift cards last
Christmas.

This annoyed me for ages! I needed it to be upside down as it would be folded over as a card. I read so many threads and then my husband came and solved in a flash, I'm halfway between grateful and resentful haha! Use wordart, you can format it to any font and move it wherever you like. Brills :)

I have Word 2008 for Mac, I wanted to rotate text 90º to use the long side of the paper.
I read it couldn't be done, then saw some that said it could.
I'll say, Yes, it CAN be done.

Open a Text box. Foremat> Text Box

Go Foremat> "Text direction" and click. It will rotate it 90º

Type what you want to put in it.

Smile guys! Good news. Microsoft quietly added a feature in Mac Word 2008 that allows you to copy and paste a text box as a pdf (select "paste special"); which makes the whole thing an image subject to free rotation control. So, stick it inside of a shape, "group" the gang and twist-n-shout any which way you want. Everything moves together. I use Word for a lot of simple designing so been crawling in and out of the software for years. Hope this helps. Happy to contribute. Bill - zst...@gmail.com

Thanks so much Zstar!! This worked perfectly. I'm making a brochure with folds that end up with some sections upside down. Anything that I imported as a picture had that little circle above it which allowed me to rotate it in a complete circle. But the text boxes on their own wouldn't do it! So I followed your advice and used the save feature called "Save as picture" which converted it to a picture and then I could rotate it. Yea! The only thing is you have to create your text first (fonts, spacing etc.) first before saving as picture because you can't after.
