You can specify font color to be gray, using the toolbar font color
button
As Dwain suggested, if you want the H/F to actually print lighter change the
font color for that content.

I followed your instructions and it works for print as pdf, but when
it comes to paper, my printer does not show the lighter gray - it's
simply blank space.
If you still have a problem it might be a good idea to check the printer
mfr's web site for an updated driver.

Set the font colour in the header style and the footer style to grey.
