This error is causing a lot of problems.

This first showed up in our PDFs on the MAC. The problem is that these pdfs
and the .doc files they were made from were done on a PC.

I have seen this on the net and most of the time this is a problem in PPT
and word or pdfs are not mentioned.

On my Mac using word I have copied the picture, pasted it in a new Word doc
and emailed it to my PC and found that I get the same message.

This is causing us a problem since we are sending these documents for
support for our grants and we are getting messages back from the Grant
committees that they can't see our supporting documentation and are getting
the message:

quicktime and a tiff (LZW) decompressor are needed to see this picture

where the picture should be.

Anyone know how to solve this problem?

Word's graphics cross platform are utterly hopeless.

I'm amazed that Preview.app does not display the PC generated tiff
properly. You are pretty much guaranteed that Word (2004 and v.X) will
mishandle and PDF image. It will turn it into a mushy raster quick as
look at you.

Grab yourself a copy of GraphicConverter from Lemkesoft.de to rid your
imported images of the slime they came in with.

PS I blame the grant committee. Any technically competent organisation
would expect you to submit applications in PDF rather than some
slippery proprietary format that will silently pervert your layout
depending on your mutual font repertoire and your mutual printer buying
decisions.

Hi Tom:

Make sure they have the latest updates to Word at the other end.

There was a version of PC Word that did indeed go out without the requisite
QuickTime converter built-in. That was fixed in a service pack.

Alternatively, they can go to the Apple website and download the free
QuickTime Viewer.

As far as I'm concern I can see this message on PC office when I open
MAC document in which I inserted picture on Mac by either apple+C and
apple+V or edit-copy and edit-paste. If you insert the picture on Mac
side by Insert>picture>from file that will be OK on PC side.

Just note this message: quicktime and a tiff (LZW) decompressor are
needed to see this picture will appear in PC Office with service pack
2, as soon as you update to SP3 you will see a big read cross with no
message instead.
That's my experiences, Inserting picture by Insert>picture>from file
do the trick.
