Does it happen with any font? Or just some of them?

It's possible that you have Borders & Shading set for those spaces without
realizing it. Select one of the squares, go up to Format> Borders and
Shading, and choose None. Any help?

A hollow square is Word-speak for "character unavailable".
Which character are you using? The Word default "non-breaking space" is a
Unicode character that is not available in all fonts. Try Times New Roman,
I am sure that has the character.
Cheers

Thanks John,
you were 100% accuret on this. I was using a special version of Times
font, Times CE, which contains special characters for Central European
languages. This font comes from Central European script for Mac OS 9
(installer is on the CD with Mac OS 9). I changed Times CE to a better
font from Adobe (Minion and Miriad CE, accompaning Acrobat Reader
4.0.5 CE, are for free) and squares gone away.
