I would say you're in a bit of trouble. There's a raft of "restrictions"
concerning the bits of MathType 6 that don't work in Word 2008.
http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/works_with.htm
At MathType on the Mac can't read Word 2007 equations from the PC.
Bob Mathews from Design Science will be along in a moment to explain exactly
what to do.
In the meantime, "how" did you install Office 2008 and MathType? For
MathType to work as far as it can in Word 2008, you need to perform a fresh
install of Office 2008 and MathType.
Any attempt to "upgrade" or "migrate" Office is likely to fail.
You also MUST apply all the updates to OS 10.6 and Office 2008, and then
"Resolve Duplicates" in Font Book. If you don't do these steps, nothing
works right in OS 10.6.
Wait for Bob Mathews: he'll be here in a moment. He may recommend that we
do a "Remove and Replace", in which case, we'll talk you through that.
Cheers

So, the first step it to try running MathType directly from the hard
drive, not from Word. If MathType isn't in your Dock, find it on your
hard drive at Applications > MathType 6. Be sure to watch out for the
pop-up asking if you want to install Rosetta, and install it when it
asks. It'll probably want to download something from Apple, so you'll
have to grant it access to the internet too, if it asks for that.
If you're able to start MathType from the hard drive, you may not have
to reinstall it. If MathType won't open from the hard drive, the
problem is more serious than just the "hooks" that make it work within
Office. The first step is to reinstall MathType and see if that works.
If MathType opens from your hard drive, the next thing to try is to
see if you can copy an equation from MathType and paste it into a Word
2008 document. If that works, save the document and close it. Close
MathType (don't just click the "stoplight"; close the program, either
from the Quit command on the MathType menu, or the Command+Q shortcut.
Reopen the document in Word 2008 and double-click the equation. If it
opens, at least you know that part works. If it gives you the same
errors you reported in your original post, try reinstalling MathType.
Write back and let us know how it goes.

Either your preferences or your Normal template have picked up rubbish from
a previous version.
1) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer,
and drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply "Normal" and has
no extension.
2) Run the Remove Office tool from
</Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Additional Tools/Remove Office>
3) Find and delete the file Normal.dotm. Unless you have moved it, it
should be in
/Users/~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/
4) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)
~/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist
5) ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)
6) Ensure that your copy of OS X is right up-to-date with the latest patches
issued by Apple. Run Software Update until it finds nothing!
7) Now insert the CD and install Office 2008.
8) Then Repair Permissions with Disk Utility.
9) Now start Font Book and "Resolve Duplicates". Office installs some later
versions of fonts already in place: you must get the duplicates out, or Word
will crash.
10) Then re-install or reapply the 12.2.0 and 12.2.3 and 12.2.4 updates, in
that order.
11) Repair permissions again.
12) NOW re-install MathType, and it should work.
Be thorough with this, if you leave any of the old files behind Word 2008
will find them and won't replace them. Do it right and Word will construct
a new, clean, set of preferences and everything should now work.
Hope this helps

If the "OLE Registration Database 11" file isn't in the folder I identified
above, it's probably in the Office 2008 subfolder, but that's one of the ones
John had you delete anyway.

It may be that the bad copy is in /System/Library/Fonts instead of
/Library/Fonts. The System/Library is required by the system, so you need
to be careful what you do in there.
