Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

Received a document from Windows user with embedded PDF's but can't open them, save to desktop, etc. Get this error message: Word cannot locate the server application for AcroExch.document.7 objects. What can I do to open these files?

I believe the most likely cause is that the document doesn't actually
contain the "embedded" PDFs that are supposed to be there. Instead it
contains *links* to those PDFs & the links are broken. There isn't anything
you can do on your end. The PC user needs to send you a new file with the
PDFs actually embedded or send you copies of the PDF files themselves.

My co-worker was able to open in the Windows version of Word - but I couldn't. So it seems like the files were there.

OK, then perhaps it is the 2nd most likely cause :-) The PDF was probably
inserted using a cut/paste or drag/drop method - among other possibilities -
which creates an OLE object specific to the world of Windows. I'm not
certain that anything on the Mac will be able to open them, but...

Have you tried Control/Right-Clicking the object, selecting Open With, then
choosing Preview... Or better yet Adobe Reader (or Adobe Acrobat if you have
it)? If that succeeds, great. If not...

Perhaps you can have your co-worker open the objects on the PC, save in PDF
format, then reinsert them properly using Insert> Object - Create from File
(wording may vary depending on version of PC Word).

[It isn't a Mac Word issue, btw. Any program needs a compatible program
(server application) in order to open linked/embedded objects of that type.]
