Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I am a writer and I'm typing my book in Word. I've got 23,000 words and now Word will not save my manuscript. A message pops up that says Too many files are open please close a window, I click okay then another window pops up saying Word has insufficient memory. Do you want to save Document.docx As Rescued Document 21(the number keeps getting higher the more I try to save)
I have got to fix this ASAP I'm on a deadline and if I can't save my book then I'm in real trouble.
I tried quitting every application but Word, and cleaning my hardrive nothing is working. Please somebody tell me how to fix it. Please.

Sounds like the computer is confused and in need of a reboot. I presume
you can simply go back to a previous version? This is not the ONLY copy
of a 23,000 word book is it? Are you having us on?

Create a blank document, Copy All, and Paste.

Word will allow you to save the other copy.

This is a totally irritating bug in Mac Word, and so far we have not seen
any fixes for it.

Make sure you have the latest update (12.2.1) applied. If you download that
fix and apply it, Word will do this "less often".

"Rescued Document 21" would also be fine: that's just a copy Word has made
because it can't save the original.

The bug is a deadly embrace: the Operating System will not allow "something"
to write to the file because it thinks Word is using it. And Word can't
tell the operating system that the "something" is itself. So the two just
sit there deadlocked.

If you set "Always make backup" in your Preferences, Word will not do it,
because it is able to CLOSE the previous version each time it saves.

When I am working on a long document, I begin each day by "Saving As" a new
version (with the date appended to the file name). I keep ALL of the daily
saves until I get paid for the project :-)

Hope this helps
