Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I just purchased Word 2008 for home use, and upon opening Word I get the following message:

Word cannot start the spelling checker.
The spelling checker files may be missing.
Make sure the spelling checker files are
installed or use the Microsoft Office Installer
to install the spelling checker.

I am using a Macbook with Snow leopard. Also Excel will not even open. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

The first consideration is whether you have applied the available updates
since installing Office. What 's on the DVD is either 12.0.0 or 12.1.0 but
12.2.1 is the current level. If you are able to launch any of the Office
apps successfully go to the Help menu & select Check for Updates. Once the
updating is complete run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions then restart
your Mac. Reply with details if the problem continues.

Hi Dan:

Sounds like a failed installation to me. Who installed the product?

That error message is fairly specific, and is not usually wrong. It means
essential parts of the application are indeed missing.

I would log in as Administrator and run the Remove Office tool from
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Additional Tools

That makes sure we get a nice clean slate. If you want to remove Microsoft
Office, you must use the tool, or things get in a hell of a mess (which may
actually be what has happened to you!).

Then do a full re-install, run a Repair Permissions from Disk Utility, then
re-start the computer and run Microsoft Update several times, until it no
longer offers you any more.

Hopefully we'll put back any missing files and things will all work
properly.

Hope this helps
