After going through the Auto-Format routine to change the
old em-dash of two hyphens (--) as I type, to the now more
modern straight dash, it only works after I once again
repeat the Auto-Format process. Help!

Hi Bill,

You should get the em dash automatically if you have the following checked:
Tools> AutoCorrect> AutoFormat as you type> Replace...> Symbol characters
with symbols.

Otherwise, I don't know why your AutoCorrect entry doesn't stick. You do
have "Replace Text as you Type" checked, right?

Bill,

My copy of Word 2001 will only produce an en dash (i.e., Option-hyphen) when
I type two hyphens, not an em dash -- I had put it down to my version of the
English dictionary being Australian English. Whatever the reason, I used
Tools -> AutoCorrect -> AutoCorrect tab -> "Replace text as you type" to
produce an em dash (which I keyed in as Shift-Option-hyphen in the
right-hand ("with") field). The keys I allocated were -=

This was previously corrected a few days ago by Beth, but
for some reason it stopped working--at least on the long
document I'm working on whereas I'm doing alot of cutting &
paste using other Word documents, which may be causing the
problem?
I think this because with a brand new document, it works fine!

As I recall, I was advised To replace the old em-dash with
the new using Tools>Auto-Correct>Auto-Format As You
Type>and then check relace Symbol Chacters with
Symbols.What have I done to screw-up?

Hi Bill,

It probably is because you're cutting and pasting from other documents
(other languages, perhaps, or styles or whatever).

See if this sticks: On the AutoCorrect tab, type the double hyphen in the
Replace box and the em-dash in the With box. Click OK and see what happens.
