I have a recipe:
1 3 1Ž2 to 4 pound boneless chuck roast
1 envelope dry onion soup mix, undiluted
1 can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1Ž2 cup of water in bottom of cooker
Where each of the 1's is followed by a tab. If I try to add another space
between lines, I get "2" at the beginning of that blank line. If I replace
the tab with spaces, it's ok. What can turn off this part of
autoformatting?

Yes, I did that. Didn't fix it. However, If I type a new document, identical
to this, the problem isn't there! I can't seem to fix the old one.

Which style is applied to the section in which the numbering occurs? Select
the entire section, then open the Formatting Palette and expand the Styles
section. Scroll up until you see "Clear Formatting" and click on it. See if
typing a new line still recreates the numbering.

Thank you, thank you! That took care of the problem, although I still don't
know what caused it. When I selected that section, the NORMAL style seemed
to be selected. CLEAR FORMATTING cleared the numbers, but took care of the
problem. How could I learn what Formatting caused that?

Hi Ed,
my guess is that AutoFormat has automatically updated the Normal style in
your document to create a numbered list entry whenever the return key is hit
within what Word considers to be a list. By clicking on Clear Formatting,
you have removed that additional information from Normal style, and it does
not update any longer since you deactivated that AutoFormat option in the
meantime.
