I had this issue last night, importing images (.jpgs) that were exported by Powerpoint. I had been working fine just moments before... nothing had changed - tried new images (no luck), same images in a new document (success), rebooting (just in case, no luck).

But, the solution:

This error occurs when you have the toolbox open, close it and you can carry on inserting. I think this may also solve the "cannot insert graph" issue that I've seen elsewhere.

As an aside:
For the MS folk - I'm working with multiple documents at once and screen-space is at a premium... would it not be possible to put a custom set of icons docked into the window pane? (Just like Windows Office) I hate that stupid toolbox... yes, I know it's the Mac-way.

You can create a custom toolbar in Office 2008 (which you can't in Office
2007). But sadly, you cannot dock it.

You can "put" it somewhere and it won't move, but you can't dock it so the
document window avoids it. A design bug...

I fell back to parking mine over the top of the standard toolbars. That way
it covers up some of the more useless stuff on the standard toolbars, and
doesn't get in the way of documents.

Yes, I hate the stupid Toolbox too: it's so slow and fiddly to find
anything.

Cheers

You don't mention your current update level of Office but I tend to think
you may well be behind. The image behavior you refer to was corrected some
time ago. I'd suggest you run Help> Check for Updates from any of the Office
apps & let it do its thing completely -- 12.1.9 is the most recent.

Also be sure OS X is fully updated -- you could be encountering a conflict
with Spaces [if you use it] which was finally corrected in the 10.5.7
update.

Repair Disk Permissions after updating & if the problem continues please
post back with details. There may be something else causing it.

BTW: I'm not a "big" fan of the Toolbox, but just in case you aren't aware
of it you can control its occupied space rather effectively. Click the bent
arrow in its upper right corner then set its properties by using the When
Inactive For as well as removing checks to exclude segments you don't need.

As John replied, you can't dock custom toolbars within the document window
but in Mac Word you never could. They can be docked beneath the Menu Bar or
on any of the other 3 sides depending on where you keep the OS X Dock. The
difference in 2008 is that the Standard Toolbar *is* permanently fixed
within the document window & the Reviewing Toolbar "can" be docked there as
well. Both Reviewing & Standard can be customized.

Hello Louis,

Just to let you know: no-one from Microsoft looks into this newsgroup. We
are simply users of Microsoft products who perversely seek to reduce the
suffering of others in mastering them (and benefit from the process
ourselves; the world needs more acts of little kindnesses, no?). The best
way to ensure your viewpoint gets to Microsoft is to send feedback via the
Help menu. We've been told somebody in the Mac Business Unit actually reads
it.

Cheers,

She does, and I've met her. Now if any of you could come up with an excuse
that would require me to meet her AGAIN.... :-)

Cheers
