For some reason my Word program keeps switching my default language to
Czech despite the fact that I have never used this language before
ever. I have tried manually changing the language back to English (US)
and have tried going through Format>Style and nothing seems to work.
If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. I'm working on an
important paper in which i need to use quotation marks, but apparently
Czech quotation marks are different from US ones. I have no idea how
to solve this problem, and I am not much of a computer person, so the
simpler the explanation the better. thank you!

Hiya,
What I would try is to change tools„language>English>Default in your normal
template or any other template your document is based on. Do you know, what
I mean?
Second thing where to look would be setting of your system in system
preferences>international>formats.

...and the third thing is to look at the style definitions for the
styles in use. Each of those can have a language property too, and I
think they win over normal and prefs styles.

And fourth, if you are pasting text in from anywhere else, it can carry
language formatting into your document.

Word doesn't really have a default language though--information on how
languages work in Word is here, though I'm not sure how it applies to your
particular issue, which is not totally clear to me. Is this happening in
just one document? In every document?

Daiya,
So far I've only noticed this problem in one document and it just
started to happen yesterday. (I've worked on the document before and
never had a problem and I worked on another paper in another language
and had no problem). Do you think it is isolated to this one document?
I have tried changing the default language in the tools menu about 100
times and it will switch back to Czech by itself after I start typing
again. It's also making it so I can't use my thesauras. Thanks
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Did you select all in the document before changing the language via Tools?

Actually, the default thing doesn't matter at all--that's not going to do
anything to your existing document. Just Select All, Tools | Language |
English, and OK. Then you can use your thesaurus.

If it continues to go crazy, repeating that process should fix it again--but
be sure to try to isolate a trigger--e.g., did you copy text from somewhere?
Is there a flag in your menu bar? Does it stay English all the time (I have
had that flag randomly switch on me before, and it does seem to change
Word's text language).

It's probably isolated to this one doc--to check you can create a new doc,
bring up Tools | Language first thing, and see what comes up highlighted.

Hope that helps,
Daiya

It's possible that the reason is nothing to do with Word. It could be
something you yourself are doing with your keyboard by hitting an
unwanted key combination.

For example, if I accidentally press the Apple-key and the Space-bar at
the same time, my iBook switches from a Roman script (UK English) to a
Central European script (Hungarian). It switches back again if I press
them simultaneously a second time.

In Mac OS 9, which is what I use, it is a recognised way of kicking the
language into the next script group (and within that script group
selecting the last used languager in that group). Hence, possibly, the
persistence of returning to Czech.

Someone else will have to tell you how to check that out in Mac OS 10.
