formatting toolbar disappeared

in the top-right corner of the window: nothing. I'm instructed to
"choose View > Show Toolbar" but I see no "View" option anywhere. I've
looked through preferences: surely I've turned off some feature. No
luck. It shouldn't be this hard!
No doubt there is an easy answer. If so, I'd like to know! For now,
I've gone back to Word 2004.

Next to the "Edit" menu should be the "View" menu.
Take a look towards the bottom of that menu to see if you have "Full
Screen" checked (that would hide the toolbars)
You can also try enabling each toolbar (about 2/3rds of the way down
the View menu is the "Toolbars" option that should have a submenu with
a bunch of options you can try turning on/off)

The instruction is just a little off - In the View menu there is a listing
of Toolbars [not Show Toolbars]. That's what you're looking for. The
Formatting toolbar is listed in that submenu. When you select it a check is
placed next to its name & the toolbar should appear. Its default location is
docked directly beneath the Standard toolbar.
If that doesn't resolve the problem come back including the exact update
level of Office & OS X. There are some other options to get the bar back.

thing I'd suggest is that you make sure Office is fully updated - 12.1.5 is
level at which Office should be. If you're not at that update level go to
Help> Check for Updates in order to get Office current. Also, run Disk
Utility - Repair Disk Permissions then restart your Mac & see if the menus
reappear when you launch Word.
If not, Quit all Office programs then go to Users/Library/Preferences & move
the file: com.microsoft.Word.plist to the Trash. Word will create a new one
when you launch the program but you may have to restore some of your
Preferences if all else is well... If not, let us know.

I did get a formatting palette, I still could not find any View
option. I closed the palette, and now I see no way to get it back.

*Toolbar* & now you're referring to the Formatting *Palette*. They're 2
separate & independently controlled devices in the Word window. The
Formatting Palette is a component of the Toolbox whereas the Formatting
Toolbar is a distinct toolbar that can be either docked [usually beneath the
Standard Toolbar] or allowed to float. Exactly which of the 2 are you unable
to display?
If it is actually the Formatting Palette click the Toolbox Button on the
Standard Toolbar - the button should be immediately to the left of the Zoom
tool towards the right end of the bar. It can also be turned on/of by way of
the View Menu along with the other palette components of the Toolbox.
The View Menu in Word 2008 should be in exactly the same location it is in
Word 2004 - at the very top of your screen in the Menu Bar where you see the
Apple Menu icon followed by the words Word - File - Edit - View - Insert -
etc. Are you saying that View is not among those menu topics? If it is
actually missing right-click the Standard Toolbar & select Customize
Toolbars & Menus from the contextual menu. On the Toolbars page of the
dialog that produces go to the Toolbars & Menus page, click the name of the
Menu Bar, then click the Reset button. That may be enough to restore it.
I'm more than happy to help you out but you have to provide an accurate &
detailed description of the circumstances. We can't see your screen from
here, we can only go on what you tell us. Once we know what we're dealing
with we can better determine what steps to take to get it straightened out.

I AM. Across the top I have: Word file edit insert format
etc.. . . NO VIEW.

There is no Toolbar. There is "Document 1" at the very top, then under
that the "Document Elements/Quick Tables etc." bar, and then, below
that, a ruler. But that's it.

Yeah, sounds like you have two problems: a Missing View menu and you've
clicked the Hide Toolbars button on the top right corner of the display.
Hide Toolbars is an unlabelled pat of the Apple Interface that goes blue if
you click it. I am not sure what its intended function was, but it traps a
lot of users because it hides all the toolbars, and they stay hidden until
you click it again.
Click it until your toolbars appear, then follow Bob's instructions.

I would have thought this too except that Sandra is apparently aware of the
tic-tac - she's already tried that per her first posting :-) Evidently her
problem goes a bit deeper. Perhaps the .plist route is in order? But I'm
going to have her try one other thing first.

Let's see if this works... If not we'll try something a bit more surgical,
but I want to rule some things out first :-)
Assuming you do have the Tools menu:
Go to Tools> Customize Keyboard, select Tools from the left column, then
click on the ToolsCustomize command in the right list. Then click in the
"Press new keyboard shortcut:" field & type Control+M (actually you can use
any stroke you'd like but I know that one is unassigned). Make sure you
click the Assign button, then click OK.
Now use the newly assigned Control+M keystroke to produce the Customize
Menus & Toolbars dialog. On the Toolbars page select the *name* of the Menu
Bar then click Reset. Make sure there's a check in the box for Standard,
select its name & click Reset again.
When you OK out of the dialog see if things improve. If not, Quit Word,
re-launch & see what happens.
If still no View menu or Standard toolbar Quit Word again, then hold down
Shift while you launch Word again.
Come back with details about each of your results.

It's a relief to have THIS figured out!
NOW: one more problem: why am I not getting the "VIEW" option across
the top? It's still, across the top: (Apple) Word File Edit Insert
format etc. .... There is no VIEW between Edit and Insert.

A question, quite unrelated: is there a way to have a "black-out" mode
in Word -- that is, where the computer desktop is blacked out and that
all one can see is the word file? I thought I read somewhere that Word
2008 had this feature.

diagnostic/troubleshooting step, not a fix :-) There are other
possibilities, but it sounds like you have a damaged Normal.dotm template.
While no Office programs are running go to:
UserName/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates
Remove or rename the file Normal.dotm, then launch Word. It will build a new
file so it will take a moment longer to launch. If your View Menu is where
it should be that should be all there is to it & you can delete the old
Normal.dotm unless you have customizations you want to recover. Let me know
if that's the case. If that doesn't correct it or the problem recurs include
the following info when you return:
What happens if you log in using a new User Account & launch Word normally?
What happens if you log in while holding Shift then launch Word normally?
As for your other query I don't know of any such feature in any version of
Word. If you simply want the Word document window to cover the entire
desktop try playing with Window> Zoom & Window> Arrange All. OTOH, if it's
other background content that you don't want to see use Word> Hide Others as
well as View> Full Screen [once you get the View Menu back :-)].
