If really all you want is bold, etc, you can use View | Toolbars |
Formatting to show formatting options in the top toolbar.
If you want to set up your own toolbar with custom options, right-click
the toolbar in the document window and select Customize Toolbar. After
that, it works pretty much the same as with office 2004.
Note: to right-click with a one-button mouse, hold down control while
clicking.
You can either customize the default toolbar, which is part of each
document window, or you can create your own toolbar, which will float.
If you customize the default toolbar, be sure to keep regular backups of
your Normal template, as you can recover custom toolbars from a corrupt
Normal, but not customized default toolbars. Your Normal template is
stored at username/library/application support/microsoft/office/user
templates.
Keep in mind that Word 2008 functions differently from prior versions - The
Formatting & Standard toolbars are displayed in the doc window rather than
docked directly beneath the Menu. Ergo, if you have no doc window displayed
you'll not see the toolbars either. They'll reappear when you open or create
another doc.
