Hi -- I'd been working with a Master Document and subdocuments. Didn't open
the master for a couple months, but when I came back, the Master Document
toolbar was all of a sudden incomplete. I was able to find "insert
subdocuments" and a couple other necessary buttons through the Customize
Toolbar function, but the Expand/Collapse buttons are nowhere to be found,
not even under "All Commands." And, of course, I can't work with the Master
Document without them 侠can't even insert a new subdoc without expanding
what's there already. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Many
thanks.
Lynn

Under View/Toolbars/Customize you could try selecting MenuBar in the
Toolbars Tab and clicking the Reset Button.

However, I'd advise you to pay heed to John McGie's dictum that there
are only two kinds of Master Documents - those that are corrupt, and
those that will become corrupt shortly. See:

Ohhh dear. Thanks. Yep, version one of what I'm trying to recreate is
corrupted, but not entirely lost. YOu think that would corrupt the toolbar,
in turn? (Alas, your suggested fix didn't work.) ... Guess I'll have to
write the next draft of my novel in one big-ass document ... !

Hi Lynne:

No, the toolbars corrupt themselves quite automatically :-)

Re-name your Normal template and they should come right.

You need to re-name, not delete. You must do this with Word closed. Word
will make a new template when it restarts. You can then copy your
customisations back from the old one, and THEN delete it.

If you delete, Word continues to use the Normal template from the trash bin
and you are no further forward.

Note: Newer flavours of Word use a "smart" Normal template. It does not
actually exist as a file until you change it from its defaults, so you won't
see it unless you have made a change to it (Style, toolbar, whatever...)

Hope this helps
