I must have done something screwy with my preferences because now when
I hit tab, it no longer gives me a sub-point bullet, instead it leaves
my bullet where it is, affixed on the left side of the page, and
simply tabs out my cursor. If I want a sub-bullet now, I have to use
my mouse and click on the "increase indent" arrow button in my
toolbar, which takes a ton of time when trying to frantically take
notes.
I have already looked through the Bullets & Numbering customizations
and styles, as well as the AutoCorrect options the best that I know
how and have found nothing to revert it back to the default sub-bullet
tab settings. This is a major pain for me - I hope someone can help!
Preferences/Edit, check the "Tabs and backspace set left indent"
checkbox.
If you have an Outline list applied to the text, Word will automatically
switch text styles and list levels for you when you Tab/Shift + Tab to
promote and demote.
A single-level list may not do this. It is supposed to "convert"
automatically to an outline list when you hit Tab. As JE notes, if you have
somehow ticked off that preference, it won't do so.
Shauna Kelly has an excellent description of how to use Bullets and
Numbering here:
