Click the Show/Hide button on the standard toolbar.

And prepare yourself for much more frequent document corruption and crashes,
because you can't see properly where you are editing.

If you want to run with all the control characters hidden, be aware that
things will fail more often. You might want to also set "Always make
backup" to ON.

Cheers

Further to John's reply, it's highly advisable that anyone who uses Word for
something more serious than an occasional informal letter should learn to
understand & use those non-printing characters. They certainly need not be
displayed at all times, but the better you understand them the less often
you'll turn them off :-) Have a look at:

Actually the BLUE ones are not the same and they are not just the Show/Hide Symbols. It would be really helpful if, instead of a lecture on the value of non-printing characters, you either kept your mouth shut or asked enough questions to learn what the questioner needs. I had a document today from an end-user that had blue (as opposed to the normal black) paragraph symbols. She was unable to delete them with the delete key after selecting them. They were somehow embedded in a Cross Reference field and they would go away if you pressed ALT+F9 to see the field codes.

Any idea what THOSE are?

That content is formatted as hidden text. Use Ctrl-A to select the entire document, then right mouse, go to Font and uncheck the 'Hidden' option. you'll probably have to click that option twice to get a blank checkbox.
