Template in a suitcase

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Intel After filling out a form, I save it as a Word document (.doc) using the only way I know about (open the template in My Templates, via Project Gallery, and then Open Word Documents on the Show pop-up). This is OK when I am on my 'home' computer. But, I also need to fill out forms at a number of different sites and have the form template on a USB drive. However, I am unable to access it (dimmed out). Is there a way to save a completed form as .doc file while using another computer?

There's a design bug in the template handling in Word X/2004 that will not
allow you to access templates unless they are in your My Templates folder.
It was fixed in Word 2008.

In the meantime, unless you upgrade your copy of Word 2004 to 2008,
templates will not be a lot of use to you.

If you save the files as .doc instead of .dot, you can access them from
anywhere. If you check the "Stationery pad" checkbox in Finder>Get Info, OS
X treats normal documents like templates: if you double-click one, it will
hand Word a copy of the document, not the original.

So mark all your forms on your USB stick as stationery, and that will serve
the same purpose.

Another Option:

Copy the template to the USB stick but use File> Open from within Word & set
the Open: list (lower left corner of the dialog window) for Copy before
opening the template. It will give you a new doc based on the template
rather than opening the template itself.

I'd further suggest that you not work directly from the USB stick. Instead,
work from the HD then move/copy the completed file to the stick.
