The Help for "Edit or format a Header or Footer" reads the same way:
"On the _View menu_ click Header and Footer". Nowhere do I see the
instruction "click on the header". If you can let me know exactly what Help
Page this is on I'll be more than happy to report it to MacBU.
What you didn't mention is that fact that there are Section Breaks in the
document. Each section has its own set of Headers & Footers, so in order to
edit or delete them you have to navigate to the H/F of that section ã or
delete the section break. Deleting the break does eliminate the H/Fs for
that section but can also have other effects on the document depending on
how that section was used. IOW, if you're in Sec1 & select Header and Footer
from the View menu you go to the Header/Footer for that section, whereas if
you're in Sec3 & do the same thing you go to the Sec3 H/F.
The line you're referring to is probably a Paragraph Border. To remove it;
1- Turn on the non-printing characters (∂),
2- Double-click where the line appears (or a little above it),
3- With your insertion point in that empty Header paragraph go to Format>
Borders & Shading,
4- On the Borders page click the 'None' preset.
