When printing the first time after opening Word, everything works fine.

When printing the second or subsequent time, it is no longer possible
to select a Page Range or From and To pages.
The symptoms are:
(1) I can select the radio buttons for From/To and for Page Range -
good
(2) I can click on the text boxes to enter a from/to page or a page
range - good
(3) The relevant text box is highlighted and a text cursor appears in
it - good
(4) I cannot change anything in the boxes - that is, I cannot replace
the default 1s in the From and To boxes, nor can I type anything into
the page range box - this is the problem

Software versions are:
Word 2004 Version 11.1 (040910)
MaxOSX 10.3.9.

Is this a known problem and when is it planned to fix it?

It's not a known problem. This is the first time in 20 years of doing this
that I have seen anyone report it. I can't reproduce the problem here, also
on OS 10.3.9 with Word 2004.

Is this one particular document, or "any" document?

The dialog you are working in is actually an OS X dialog, generated by the
OS X Print Manager. Word reads in the information sent to it by the print
manager, and returns that information unchanged with each print job.

I could only suggest that you reboot your computer and see if that clears
it. If not, the next thing I would do is rename your Word Preference Files.
If that doesn't cure it, I would remove and replace your printer.

But I am afraid I am simply guessing: I have no idea what could cause this
one.

Cheers

It's interesting that you weren't able to reproduce it. The reason why
I am reasonably confident there is some sort of problem here is that
I'm already producing the problem for a friend who has identical
software levels, but a different Mac and a different printer. Moreover
there is at least one inconclusive thread from 2004 here which suggests
that someone else has had a similar problem.

The problem is entirely reproducible for all documents, on both
systems. I've already tried closing down and restarting, trashing the
preference files, and deleting/redefining the printer.

Any further ideas greatfully received!

It's not quite that unknown John, I had what /appears/ to be that same
problem in February 2004 but with Word X (10.1.5) and Mac OS 10.3.1.

Daiya suggested updating the printer driver and deleting a few files.
For me, the deletions cured the problem. I didn't redo the driver.

I certainly haven't seen the problem since that time, but I have now
progressed through several updates in both Office and OS.

In Google Groups lookup: "Print a Page Range broken?"
in "microsoft.public.mac.office.word"

Just reporting that I saw this problem once (unable to type in the Page
Range box, did not try the From, To), but quitting and restarting Word fixed
it, and I was able to type in the box consistently thereafter.

Yes - this is an Apple bug and was fixed in Tiger. I see from your report
you are running Panther. Apple did not release a fix for this in Panther,
nor do they, I believe, intend to.
