A search of the Web just returns the keystrokes I already know. Has
anyone ever had to deal with this?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

This is a very well discussed topic. Google the group for "macron".
The answer depends on whether you are using Word 2004 or an earlier
version.

You need a couple of things:
- make sure the font you are using supports these characters
- use the character palette to select and add them to your text.
You can create special shortcuts for these letters, but they won't use
the same key-combination as accented aeiouy unless you use a different
input method (keyboard-layout).
