Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hi all,
my copy of Word 2008 constantly hangs (I get the spinning wheel) when I try to copy anything from other applications including text via Safari from the internet. I've already tried reinstalling it but I still have the same problem. I'm running Snow Leopard. Does anyone know of a potential solution?
Thanks.

If it occurs when you're *copying* it most likely isn't a problem with Word
itself. Cutting/Copying is a function of the operating system in conjunction
with the design of the program you're using at the time. OTOH, If it
actually occurs when *pasting*, that's a different story.

This is something that was addressed in previous updates & those updates are
critical to the operation of Office in Snow Leopard. It sounds like you
haven't applied those updates. Your installation of Office should be at
12.2.3 & you need the 10.6.2 update of Snow Leopard. Once you have all the
software updated run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions, restart your
Mac & see if the problem persists.

BTW: Reinstalling Office is *rarely* the proper procedure for any type of
issue & can actually do more harm than good... Such as getting Office back
up to date as well as other issues. If you have any problems reply here with
specific details on how to proceed.

Sorry, should have been more specific. The problem occurs when *pasting* into Word, although it seems that Excel also hangs when trying to paste. I'm running 12.2.3 Office and 10.6.2 Snow Leopard. Following your suggestion I ran Disk Utility and repaired disk permissions and restarted. Problem still persists. Do you have any suggestions?

OK, now that those issues are ruled out: What is the nature of the copied
material? Where are you copying it from? What program are you using when you
do the copying? What other details can you provide?

The copied material is seemingly any type of text or image. But when I tested it using different programs it was quite puzzling. Both Word and Excel froze when trying to paste material from Safari and Textedit. But for some reason it seemed to work fine from Firefox. I don't know what this means but it might implicate the source of the issue. Any ideas?

Effectively, this means that the code you have on the clipboard can not be
interpreted by Word.

It may be that you are attempting to copy from a "secure" web page that
insists on refreshing the page when you try to paste, and Word is waiting
for the refresh to happen, but it cannot because the browser has the page
locked.

You can get lots of silliness like this trying to paste active content from
web pages.

Which page are you trying to copy from? I'll take a look.

Cheers

Sorry, I need the URL of the web page you are looking at. There are about
five different websites all feeding into the server I am looking at, which
is not a "Web Page".

Hi John,

I've tested these pages, none of them work. Although I can copy the URL from the address bar into a word document without any problems any text from any website won't work.

No. They all work here (or at least, they don't hang Word...)

Check your firewall: if the firewall is blocking Word from accessing the
Internet, it will hang when pasting web pages.

Other than that, if you are sure those updates are applied, I cannot think
what might be causing this. Are you running any haxies such as TypeItForMe
that might be interfering with the operation of the clipboard?

Cheers

I'm having no problem with copy/paste here with either of the URLs you
listed - or any others, for that matter, using:

Office 12.2.3
OS X 10.4.11
Safari 4.0.4

Try logging in while holding the Shift key & see if the problem persists. If
it doesn't there is definitely some program which launches automatically
that is interfering with the clipboard operation.

Does the same thing happen if you use Word's Edit> Paste Special options
rather than simply pasting?

What most makes me suspect that this is not an Office issue is the fact that
you've mentioned several times that the hang occurs when you paste content
from TextEdit. AFAIK, there is nothing that a TextEdit file can contain
which should present a problem of that nature when pasted into either Word
or Excel. I'm still leaning toward an influence external of Office.

If the problem continues it might be worth fetching the OS X 10.6.2 COMBO
Update from Apple Downloads & reapplying that.

We have the same Problem,
if I copy in Safari or pages and want to paste into Word 2008, word
freezes. It's even if I have something out of safari or pages in the
clipboard and start writing something in word (without pasting), word
2008 freezes.
But if I copy something out of firefox everything works well. We have
5 macs. On 2 systems we have this problem. One has just been
installed. I also tried other users, new users...nothing helped.

Michael

We were also having the pinwheel of death when pasting any text into Word or Excel. After much trial and error it was found to be a whiteboard software program we use made by Promethean called Inspire. Updating the Inspire program to the newest version eliminated the copy/paste problem. When Word crashed there were calls to the Activ services. We are currently using Inspire ver. 1.4.20411 (April 2010) and Office 2008 ver. 12.2.4 (100205), OS X ver. 10.6.3 with no copy/paste problems at the moment. Hope this helps someone.

Thank You Michael!

We had one other user with this as an unsolvable problem, and we suspected
it was being caused by the Promethean software.

Your report confirms it.

Hi Bob, John and Michael,

Thank you so much for working this through! I've had this problem since December last year and had given up...I had Promethean Inspire installed as well but had uninstalled it and the problem still persisted so I just started using Open Office. I've reinstalled Inspire and updated to the latest version - everything working brilliantly!

Thank you again!
