Do you have do buy anything to use microsoft powerpoint
or can you download it?

A lot depends upon what you mean by "use."

If you simply need to play a presentation that was created by PowerPoint
then you can use the free PowerPoint viewer, which you can download here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/office98/powerpoint98viewer.asp

If you wish to create or modify a presentation then you need to purchase and
install PowerPoint, or use a competitive program that can Save-As in
PowerPoint format. Competitive programs will not have all of the features of
PowerPoint, so the only way to have the complete program is to buy and
install PowerPoint.
