Are they not displaying preview there?

First, the version of Office makes no difference - Finder windows are a
function of the OS & behave the same regardless of what programs are
installed. My understanding - pretty much confirmed by Mac Help - is that
the preview pane of an actual Finder window will display a preview of an
*image* file [JPEG, TIFF, etc.] if it can (assuming the image has a
preview). For other file types the preview displayed is the program's icon.
I don't remember it ever being different, although there are some
"exceptions" - text files being one. Bottom line, though, is that if you are
accurately remembering differently the change must have been imposed by the
OS somewhere along the line without being noticed at the time - no version
of Office can do anything to modify Finder's behavior.
In any given program, however, the window produced by File> Open enables the
preview to display for file types recognized by that program (again,
assuming the file was saved with a preview). In fact, Word 2004's Open
dialog window will display PPt 2004 previews. So what I'm finding is:
1- In PPt 2008 File> Open I see previews of any PPt file saved with a
preview regardless of which version created it,
2- Older PPt files saved in 2008 PPTX format are no exception, but
3- Once saved as PPTX, PPt 2004 cannot display the preview - which is to be
expected because of the difference in file type, and
4- Under no circumstances does Finder, itself, display a PPt preview.

One thought: In previous versions, if you look at File, Properties, Summary
tab, there's a checkbox that sets whether PPT should save a preview image in
the file.
Check to see if that's still checked, assuming the feature's still there in
2008.

So if things were unchanged with Office 2008, why does Leopard not show a preview like it did with Office 2004?
It seems something had to have changed for Leopard not to be able to recognize and show a preview icon like it did in Office 2004.

Yeah, it's broken. We're waiting on a fix from Microsoft or Apple.
Sorry: It's a bug.
