Secondly, from the lack of information contained in your op nobody here has
any idea what your experience level may be or what you may have tried or
anything more than what you write. It isn't assumed that someone seeking
assistance here is a "computer super user".
Thirdly, Mac Office runs on various releases of OS X just as the Windows
version runs on various versions of the Windows OS, but even with the
Windows OS update levels are significant factors. Other than asking for
verification of pertinent info which you hadn't volunteered there was no
discussion of "macintosh's operating system" in my reply.
And as for the "lacks grounding" snipe I have no idea what you mean. I've
searched the archives for the last year's postings without there being a
single report found of your issue... Questions pertaining to Freeze Panes,
yes, but not anything similar to what you described. There is no inherent
problem with the feature. The reported problems are specific to each user's
local installation & experience level. I did indicate what the most common
cause of what you described, but you're apparently more interested in your
rant than responding to that point or even acknowledging that part of my
reply.
Obviously my 25 years of experience pales in comparison to your level of
expertise so I'll waste no more of your time with my unworthy attempts to
assist you in resolving the problem. I'm sure you'll be more comfortable

Try going to the View menu and changing it to "Normal".
Then your document will look like the regular XLS document layout on a PC
and Freeze Panes should work for you again.
Have a great day!

I have just discovered that your Excel spreadsheet needs to be in Normal or Page Break View and not Page Layout View to freeze panes. The greyed out option becomes black and allows you to freeze lines etc. Hope this helps
