What have you tried? What are you trying to select? How are you selecting them? What happens differently from what you expect.

It would be REALLY useful to have an answer to this question. When I copy filtered cells from a filtered column, I want to paste ONLY these cells into another column. With a simple Paste, the filtered cells are pasted but are aligned with respect to the unfiltered entries, i.e., most will not be in the correct row. Paste Special with "Skip Blanks" checked also does not work. Without this capability, Excel 2008 is a very limited program in terms of use for file construction. I hope what is limited is my knowledge; I am eager to eliminate my ignorance! Many thanks in advance.

Hi Steven, could you please check your MacOffice's update level? I just tried your scenario on the latest version (12.2.3), and I couldn't repro your copy/paste issue.

Thanks,

Thanks for your reply. I am using 12.2.3. To repeat the problem: filter any column for a given item in the column. Copy the selected rows. I want to paste ONLY the rows containing the selection. The standard paste function pastes all rows spanned by the rows in the filtered list, So, how does one paste only the filtered values one ses and no more?

many thanks in advance

Hi Steven,

You can customize the toolbars and menus in Excel. This allows you to
add new commands that don't appear by default.

Choose View > Menus and Toolbars
The Customize Menus and Toolbars dialog box opens
Click the Commands button near the top
In the Categories column click Edit
Scroll down to the middle of the Commands column
Drag Select Visible Cells to any menu or toolbar
Drag Select Current Region to any mneu or toolbar
Click OK to close the customize dialog box.

Try these buttons to see if they meet your needs.

-Jim

MANY thanks! This is quite helpful. I am still a bit unclear about the "usage" of this too. In particular, it appears that putting the icon to the toolbar makes pasting only visible cells the default behavior (unless the icon is removed). Is this true? is it possible to toggle between paste only visible cells and paste all cells without removing the icon? Or do I misunderstand something basic about what is going on here??

many thanks again!

S.

Whatever is on the clipboard when you paste, gets pasted.

Maybe an example will help. If you select a cell range and then click
the Select Visible Cells button, only the visible cells within the range
will be copied to the clipboard. So if you dragged over a range that
included columns A through G, but columns D & E were hidden, the values
in D & E will not be copied to the clipboard. When you paste, you'll get
all the values except for those that were in columns D & E. If you
selected entire columns, your result will be different - paste will
include columns D&E even if they are hidden.

Hey Jim,

I know this is a bit dated... trying to do this on Mac OSX 10.8.2, Excel 2011 v14.2.5... this isn't working out. I'm still getting some errors at some points in my list, not sure why. Listing out numbers 1-100 next to cells I'm working with for quick checking.. COUNT or SUM work for certain sets of that group, but not all.

Any ideas?
