Arrow keys not working in google sheets

When trying to type in the cells of a google sheets document, the app is making me double click each cell before I can type. I cannot simple hit enter/ tab/ arrow key to navigate to a new cell and start typing. Tab and arrow keys do not change the current cell. Enter will move the selected cell, but not allow me to type in the new cell. I am using an iPad Pro and magic keyboard.
