I have encountered a problem whereby any spreadsheet I have
which contains a macro will no longer open in Excel X.
I get the message "error accessing system registry". I have
checked to see if any system files are locked, rebooted, checked
the website, emailed microsoft, all to no avail...
Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks,
Simon.
Since there is no system registry in Macintosh, my guess is that the
workbook contains a macro written for windows that issues this error. Can
you open the workbook with the shift key down - to prevent auto macros from
running? Do you get the same error?

Thank you for replying to my post.
Yes, I have tried disabling Macros. I think the problem relates to
the installation/operation of VB and macros, rather than to any
specific spreadsheet.
First of all, it occurred suddently. I was able to open these files
previously.
Secondly, I cannot run VB or macros from Word or Excel. I get
errors "Unable to record" (for macros) and "The VB editor could
not be started..." (in word).
Possible reasons given in Word are: 1) not enough free memory
2) files may have been moved or deleted or 3) the VB editor has
not been installed.
I have 784mb RAM and it was working before, so that leaves
option 2 although nothing has been moved, installed or deleted
between it working and not working.
The last thing I did in excel before the problem occurred was to
screen capture parts of my excel project to send to a client.
Thanks again for any help.
Simon.

If that doesn't work, I'd suggest trashing
Carbon Registration Database
from the ~/Library/Preference/Microsoft folder (~ being your home directory)

Simon -
I have been having this problem as well, and I have been very
frustrated at not finding any useful fixes. Today, it's fixed. I
updated Office to Service Release 1 (still didn't work) and I trashed
the Carbon Registration Database file, as JE recommends above.
Suddenly, >>KAPOW<< spreadsheets with VB code open just fine.
I had tried to trash many other suspect files, but none had any
effect. I had also run FIX DISK PERMISSIONS, that didn't do it
either. So I would suggest following JE's instruction first, then
looking into other things if that doesn't fix.
