It's on an iMac 2.66 GHz running 10.5.8. I've deleted the Microsoft
Preferences file in <user>/Library and rebuilt the database multiple
times.
Any idea of the cause?
Thx,

This is a new one. I would do two things.
1) download and run the latest Apple combo updater
Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update (For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )
<http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update>
2) "Remove Office" and re-install

It wouldn't hurt to run Repair Permissions after you complete the installs.

I did try a repair permissions along the way but I'll try both of
these things first, do another one, and see if they help.
Many thanks for the quick reply.

I did as you suggested, installing the Combo Updater and then
reinstalling Office 2008. I ran a Repair Permissions afterwards (and
restarted just for the heck of it) and the problem is gone.
Thanks for your help,

Glad it worked. Thanks for letting us know.

Please help avoid confusion.
If you have an answer or comment for the original poster then please
respond within his or her thread. Otherwise, if you're looking for a
solution to your own problem -- no matter how similar to someone else's
-- then begin your own thread. Similar problems may not have the same
solutions.
The problem you are describing is usually due to removing Office and
then installing it again. However, you need to apply all the updates to
bring Entourage back to the version that last opened your Entourage
Database. Go to the Help menu in any other Office application such as
Word and select "Check for Updates". Once you are fully up-to-date then
Entourage should be able to open your identity.
If this doesn't answer your question then begin a new thread with
details of your own problem, include your software versions and what
you've tried already to fix the problem.

This message usually means, for example, any Identity saved with a 12.1.0 or
later version will not open in 12.0.0 or 12.0.1. Since there was a database
format change in 12.1.0 (SP1), Entourage 12.0.0 or 12.0.1 cannot open a
database saved in the later version.
Once you upgrade, the Identity will open.
