The Microsoft Database daemon allows the Reminder to work even if all MS
applications are closed. It's not some hidden evil conspiracy. :-)
If you select "Turn off Notifications", that will prevent it from appearing
in Login items pref and you will not get the notifications.

Turn on Office Notifications
1. Double-click the Office Notifications program, located in the Microsoft
Office X/Office folder.
2. On the Office Notifications menu, click Turn On Office Notifications.
Tip If Microsoft Entourage is installed on your computer, you can also
turn on Office Notifications in Entourage. To do so, start Entourage, and
then click Turn On Office Notifications on the Entourage menu. (this is
under Entourage in the menu bar)
