Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

Recent Mac and Office for Mac user. I'm having the same Entourage authentication error reported. My Apple mail client works fine. Entourage can receive but not send email. Everything has been checked and re-checked. Talked with ISP to verify account name and password. Deleted and re-added the email account. Installed the latest Office update. Verified and repaired the database. What am I missing? Thanks

Under Advanced Setting in the account window, be sure you have the correct
authentication selected.

This is unchecked. SMTP server requires authentication is checked (validated by ISP).
Whether I check 'Use same settings as receiving mail server or 'Log on using' and supply Account ID ans password I get the same error. I did verify account name and password with ISP support.
"Error
Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available authentication methods.
Error: -17897"
If I uncheck 'SMTP server requires authentication' I get a different error.
"Error
5.5.2 RCPT TO syntax error
Error: -17099".
I'm at a loss here as to how to correct this.
Unfortunate..I would really like to use it.
Thanks for the help.

thanks

Try setting up in Apple Mail. If that works, you can create a new Identity
in Entourage and select to import just the account info from Apple. Open the
Accounts that were imported and take screenshots of the settings. Be sure to
open the advanced tabs.

Delete the accounts in your main Identity in Entourage. Create new accounts
using the screenshots as templates.

Apple mail works fine. I did as you advised, imported new account into Entourage from Apple mail. Created new accouns from Apple mail account info. This causes a 'RCPT TO syntax error' because the imported account info does not have 'SMTP requires authentication' check box checked (Error: -17099). Once this is checked and correct password supplied it's back to the same error 'Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available authentication methods' (Error: -17897). I also deleted all existing accounts and configured a new account manually with the same results.
I've seen this issue reported by a few others but never a root cause or solution.
thanks

A user reported recently that their server had to set up their account in a
special section for Entourage users. This was for Exchange.

I'm not quite sure what can be happening. Your best bet is to work with your
ISP to see what's failing. They should be able to monitor your account to
see what is failing.

If you had access to Tiger, you could use tcpflow. See directions here for
tcpflow:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>

Another application I ran into recently is EavesDrop....Let it capture some
stuff then double-click any of the lines of text in the main window to see
more detail.
