This folder appears to be continually growing , now about 200 meg, continues
to grow with files.
Thanks,
Jim
My Entourage Temp folder is empty!
Have you checked the dates on the files that are there, and looked to
see what they are and where they came from? My understanding is that it
is used when downloading mail and should be empty when downloading
completes and mail is received into Entourage. It may also be used when
creating outgoing attachments; I'm not sure about that. But in any case
I know about, nothing should be left there, especially when you exit
Entourage. The files you see there may have been left behind by crashes,
and probably can be deleted without concern.

The dates are effectively every day, including today, going back to when I
first began using Entourage. The majority of files appear to be attachments
or at least have the word Attachment in the name, from the emails I have
received, but include other files like graphics, html pages that were sent
as newsletters, etc.
By the way, do you view using the preview pane?

Mine is empty too.
Jim, it sounds like you may have a problem

Just to be sure we are looking at the same folder, I'm looking in the:
Documents/Microsoft User Data/Entourage Temp/
I went in a cleared it out and had some interesting results. Basically some
html and other attachments were no longer available for viewing in the
Preview Pane?

Sorry but I don't understand what you mean by Preview Pane. I don't think I
use it because it is a foreign term to me.

Yes and when I checked the first time it was empty. I just checked again
and there are now six temps on some attachments I sent today.
I check back later and see if they have been cleaned out

I use the Preview Pane and my folder is empty. I've never seen in thing in
it, but I have rarely checked it.
Is it possible you have a rule set to save attachments?

I looked and have no rules at all. I have not created any scripts either.
Running basic installation since, well since installed. (now on vs 10.1.1 SR
1)
Strange.
Do you know of any documentation on the use or purpose for the temp
directory?

If you double-click an attachment in the attachments pane of a message to
open it without saving it to disk, it is temporarily saved to the Temp
folder. (It has to be saved somewhere to be able to open as a file.) There
may be some sort of complex HTML that involves downloading something,
although I don't know of any. When you quit Entourage, all those files
disappear - are deleted. It has nothing to do with the preview pane.

PLEASE always state which version of Entourage you are using - 2001 or X.
It's often impossible to answer your questions otherwise.
It would appear then, that my dilemma has been, that these files have not
been getting deleted if they are supposed to be at the time of exiting
Entourage.

Just tried it for the first time and I don't like it at all. It is now
turned OFF and will stay off. Nice to know it there in case I need it some
day.
Thanks for the suggestion, I am always removing messages from the server.
After futzing about with this a bit more, I believe I have the answers I was
looking for. Interesting that there were no responses for where the
documentation is on this folder or its' use.
Anyway it appears that, generally speaking, the temporary files placed into
this temp folder are always removed when the application Entourage is
exited. They are placed there for a few different times or reasons. There
are some exceptions for their clean removal, such as when the system crashes
(not too often thankfully) or freezes. Additionally there appears to be a
problem when crossing over dates on the calendar. When the application runs
thru a date change, as I am often running Entourage thru the midnight hours,
the exit routine clearing out these temp files seems to leave the previous
days files and only clears out the current days temp files.
So in the case where we basically leave Entourage running for 6 or 7 days
straight (working thru hundreds of emails per day) you can see the number of
temp files begins to grow in this folder can get large.
Looks like I'll need to create a routine to dump these correctly on exit,
unless someone can tell me why they should not be removed.

There's usually no particular reason for doing either one or the other. You
shouldn't have to think about it at all, unless you're _extremely_ short of
disk space and get lots of attachments which you enjoy opening by
double-clicking without saving to disk. (These are the ones that get saved
in Entourage Temp temporarily.) You can just let them accumulate until you
quit Entourage. It's probably not a bad idea to "flush out memory" anyway by
quitting Entourage, and all other apps, once in a while. Once a day, once a
week, whatever. You can just forget about Temp folder.
