This happened to me recently too. I upgraded to Messenger for Mac 7.0.2 a few months ago -- reluctantly, I might add. (Previously was using Messenger 6 for Mac.)

Within the last few days, Messenger 7 has refused to connect to the service with the exact same message you describe. If I try to sign in with the wrong password, I'll immediately get kicked out with a message stating that the password is incorrect, so at least authentication is working. But trying to log in with the correct password, Messenger spins for a while and eventually times out with the same message you describe.

The firewall on my MacBook Pro is turned off. My router does not block MSN / Windows Live Messenger at all. I know this for a fact because I have a PC running Vista on my home network, and it goes through the same router that my MacBook Pro goes through to get to the Internet. As you can imagine, I can log in to Windows Live Messenger from my Vista PC just fine using the same exact login ID (obviously not at the same time).

I have tried deleting all preferences, which makes you go through the setup assistant all over again the next time you launch Messenger. That doesn't seem to help. I am going to try doing some debugging and e-mailing the debug logs to the Mac BU staff per one of the other postings in this forum. I'm also going to try deleting and reinstalling Messenger, perhaps even downgrading to version 6.

This is very frustrating to me as I rely on Microsoft Messenger / Windows Live Messenger in its various incarnations on multiple platforms, and I never had problems with version 6.

I see several postings on this topic dating back to 2008, which is shocking to me. It seems this problem is recurring. I have also noticed attempting to try again with sign-in will cause Messenger to lock up, and force-quitting the app from the dock will still leave a process called "Microsoft" running in the background (which I discovered running top from the terminal). Fortunately, I was able to manually kill that process from the terminal as well.

I seem to have resolved this for my MacBook. I went to System Preferences, Internet & Wireless, Network, Airport, Advanced, Proxies. I unchecked Web Proxy (HTTP), and clicked OK. Instantly fixed. I tried everything else mentioned on these boards but this finally resolved after I compared all settings with another Macbook which was connecting. Worth a shot. Good luck.
