Today I installed Messenger on my Mac for the first time. Immediately after
I cranked it up and logged in, I was told that Swi...@hotmail.com "wants
wants to know you're on line", something like that. I forget the actual
text.

I blocked it.
Anyone know about this? Could it be someone who scans for new Messenger
logins all day and captures information for spamming purposes?

It could be someone who wants to add you to their Instant Messaging listing.

It could be as simple as they mis-typed an e-mail address while adding a
contact.
