Mac Messenger 6.0.3 cannot check Hotmail

I am using a new Macbook running Leopard. Previously I used Mac Messenger 6.0.3 and could check my Hotmail. But then I installed Office 2008 (replaced my Office 2004) and the Messenger fails to check my Hotmail. Why is that???
