Apologies for missing something that may be critical.

When I go to the dropdown to "turn On" the server, the web page status goes
to "error on page", then after less than a minute it revers to a status of
done.

I am running into the same problem. I can create and edit virtual machines,
but can not get them to start. When I click on Turn On on the administration
web page, I get the "Error on page" message in the corner, quickly followed
by "Done." The details of my error message were pretty much identical to
what you posted:

Do I have a security setting in IE wrong? I tried lowering security for the
trusted zone to Low, but that didn't work. I am starting to suspect that it
is something else entirely, but don't currently know where to look. Any tips
will be appreciated.

I ran into this issue. Took me a second but I just ran the site in
capability mode. Running in IE 8.0.
