Windows Defender scan never ends

Starting from 3-4 days ago, my WD can't finish a scan process.
I havent made any changes to the system, except I applied several updates
from MS.
It loops and loops on a file and never goes to the next.
Funny thing is that it always stops on a different file (no rules what so
ever except of course it always stops on an executable file of a sort (exe,
dll, bat...)).
Once it even started looping on the autoexec.bat batch which is actually an
empty file (0 bytes).
Even when I click the Stop Scan button, it does not stop. I actualy have to
right click it's icon in the taskbar and click Exit.
Next time I run WD, it will start and scan for a while, and then again start
looping on a file. Right now, it is looping on c:\
windows\system32\zipfldr.dll.
I am using Vista business with all the current updates and also Defender
with all the current updates.
