fatal error J0162: Failed to initialize compiler
The SDK documentation says message J0162 indicates that the compiler
can't find the CLASSPATH, which is supposed to be set when the Java
virtual machine is installed. I tried setting CLASSPATH myself with the
DOS set command, and with the jvc /cp option, but no luck. I used
explorer to check the date on my classpath
\windows\java\classes\classes.zip
and it is the one I just installed by download.
Anybody have an idea what the problem is?

I have the very same problem!
Were you able to figure out a way past it?
BTW, my classpath in the registry says:
"C:\WINDOWS\java\classes\classes.zip;C:\WINDOWS\java\classes;."
which however does not correspond to my entire classpath as set
for the environment variable in autoexec.bat. Does this matter?
I do have C:\Windows\Java\Classes\classes.zip as part of that
environment variable, though (do I need to?), among other things.
Unfortunately, an attempt to invoke jvc still produces this
fatal error J0162: Failed to initialize compiler
Many thanks for your help (anyone); it is greatly appreciated.

When you download SDK 3.1, the JVM is to be downloaded separately - it says so
in very small print at the website.
You can check out the JVC JVM requirements in the release notes.
If you write jview on the command prompt, the program reports the current JVM
build on screen.
